Greetings Bitcoiner,
Welcome to Issue #658 of Bitcoin Breakdown, where it’s OPSEC Wednesday special, followed by the latest Quick Bits snippets. But first, today’s Top Stories:
Bitcoin has strung together three straight monthly gains for the first time since 2012, and the market carrying this run looks nothing like the one that produced it. Four long-dormant wallets then moved about $161 million and answered an abandoned-property lawsuit on chain. Federal prosecutors are separately examining whether Binance allowed Iran-linked entities to trade.

📈 Bitcoin's Third Green Month, First Since 2012
Bitcoin has posted three consecutive monthly gains in 2026, rising 4.8% in July, 25.2% in August and 10.9% in September. The only prior btc/usd streak came in 2012, when a 9.7% October decline bottomed at $10.17 before a rally of more than 2,000% to $230 by April 2013.
Why it matters: Matching this run to 2012 ignores a multi trillion dollar market that now carries substantial institutional participation, spot ETFs and derivatives. That structural gap means the streak shows scarcity meeting deeper liquidity, not a repeatable script. Read more→
🔓 $161 Million in Dormant Bitcoin Wakes Up
Four long-dormant wallets moved a combined 1,971 bitcoin, worth about $161 million, between September 6 and September 22, 2026. Three of them carry Noah Doe tags tied to a New York Supreme Court suit seeking declaratory ownership of 39,069 dormant wallets.
Why it matters: Each spend shows the original owner still holds the private key, which answers the lawsuit's abandoned-property premise on chain. Analysts read the transfers as self-custody migration or consolidation because no exchange-tagged destination address appeared. Read more→
⚠️ Feds Probe Binance Over Iran-Linked Trading
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan and the Justice Department's Criminal Division are investigating whether Binance knowingly allowed Iran-linked entities to trade, Bloomberg reported. The probe sits alongside Operation Economic Outcast, which froze Iranian state-linked holdings mostly held in USDT.
Why it matters: An investigation does not establish wrongdoing and may conclude without charges, and Binance cites a zero-tolerance policy for sanctions violations. A key held in self-custody creates no exchange record for prosecutors to subpoena. Read more→

A new infostealer called Rapuncel, spread through fake GitHub repositories impersonating LastPass and 39 other companies, searches victims' computers for any file with ‘seed,’ ‘wallet,’ or ‘recovery’ in its name, which means the forgotten screenshot or text file from your first wallet setup may now be worth more to an attacker than your hardware wallet.
This week's OPSEC Feature Article shows you how to sweep every device, photo library, and cloud account for stray copies of your seed, and decide which to destroy, which to move offline, and which wallets to migrate.
