🌍 Washington Eyes Stablecoins to Sell More Treasuries

The Trump administration is considering an initiative to promote dollar-backed stablecoins overseas, Bloomberg reported. The plan could include joint ventures with private-sector firms and span the Treasury, the State Department, and the US International Development Finance Corp. Its stated aims are reinforcing the dollar's reserve-currency status and boosting demand for US Treasuries, while other economies build rival payment rails such as Project mBridge, which carries China's digital yuan.

Why it matters: The plan echoes a warning OG Bitcoiner Simon Dixon has long made, that dollar stablecoins turn foreign users into financiers of US debt while Genius Act rules favor licensed issuers. Bitcoin held in self-custody stays outside both and remains the exit. Read more→

⚡ Lightning Lands in the x402 Web Payments Spec

The x402 Foundation merged PR #2861 on September 23, 2026, defining how to use x402 with Bitcoin Lightning payments. x402 was originally built by Coinbase and is now governed via the Linux Foundation, with Cloudflare, Google, Visa, and Stripe participating. Lightning payments under x402 are proven via the payment preimage.

Why it matters: Lightning now sits inside a standard with Google, Visa, and Stripe participating, which means Bitcoin reaches developers already building on x402. Preimage proof allows a server to verify settlement without trusting an issuer. Read more→

🏦 Raiffeisen Readies Bitcoin Trading for 18M Customers

Raiffeisen Bank International is expanding its Bitpanda partnership group-wide, giving subsidiaries in 11 Central and Eastern European countries with about 18 million customers the infrastructure to launch Bitcoin trading. The service has been live in Austria since a 2024 pilot and is set to expand to Albania, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia in the first half of 2027.

Why it matters: Bank-app trading against fiat is not self-custody, but it puts bitcoin in front of 18 million customers where they already bank. Bitcoin Breakdown sees the RBI Bitpanda partnership as a first step, with the real win coming when customers hold their own keys. Read more→
