$178M Longs Wiped 📉, Landfall Wallet Ships 🔑, Second Loses 0.75 BTC 🛡️

Bitcoin slid under $83,000 as Coinglass logged $178M in long liquidations, a deleveraging flush, not a Bitcoin-specific break.

Greetings Bitcoiner,

❝

Welcome to Issue #671 of Bitcoin Breakdown, where every Tuesday and Thursday, we bring you the latest must-read Bitcoin thought leadership articles and the newest tools and projects you should know about. But first, today’s Top Stories:

Leverage, keys and exit paths shape today's issue. Bitcoin dipped to $83,062 as long bets got flushed alongside gold and stocks, Landfall turns one recovery phrase into OCEAN Lightning payouts, and Second says an Ark exploit cost only its own 0.75 BTC. Each story shows who carries the risk when custody and liquidity sit with someone else.

📉 Bitcoin Dips to $83,062 as Long Bets Get Flushed

Bitcoin traded at $83,062 after dipping as low as $82,823, as nearly $178M in BTC long positions were closed over 24 hours, according to Coinglass. Gold, silver and stocks also dipped alongside bitcoin, which points to a broad deleveraging event rather than a Bitcoin-specific break.

Why it matters: Leverage turns paper bitcoin bets into exit liquidity for the other side of the trade, while self-custody holders without margin face no liquidation. Savers keeping their keys get cheaper sats because overleveraged traders are forced to sell into Bitcoin's dip. Read more→

From leverage flushes to keeping your own keys...

🔑 Landfall Turns One Phrase Into OCEAN Payouts

Developer Vincenzo Palazzo released Landfall, a showcase wallet where one 24-word recovery phrase derives the BIP-84 payout address, seeds a Lexe Lightning node for a BOLT12 offer and signs OCEAN's verification message with BIP-322. Palazzo warns against parking a large balance because a showcase gets no security audit, no release schedule and no support.

Why it matters: Miners who verify the BIP-322 signature themselves stop trusting a pool dashboard, while their keys stay with them. Self-custody at the payout layer removes a gatekeeper from OCEAN payouts, though without an audit Landfall stays a payout pipe, not a vault. Read more→

🛡️ Second Says Ark Exploit Hit Only Its Own 0.75 BTC

Second says an attacker exploited a bug in its Ark server's boarding flow and took 0.75 BTC of its own liquidity. No user funds were affected, according to Second, because user VTXOs sit on pre-signed exit paths the server cannot spend.

Why it matters: The server could not move user value even when compromised, which means the operator's liquidity, not savers' bitcoin, absorbed the loss. That is what self-custody with a unilateral exit buys Bitcoin users, with no counterparty bailout, just keys and an exit path. Read more→

  • Cory Klippsten of Swan Bitcoin argues that he'd rather own bitcoin than stock in Anthropic, noting bitcoin's 35% gain since SpaceX's debut while questioning Anthropic's $2T valuation, $500B compute commitments, and dilution risks versus bitcoin's fixed 21M supply (Oct 3 | 2 min read).

  • Dhruv Bansal and Stephen Hall of Unchained write that centralization is the root problem afflicting money and the world, and that bitcoin's peer-to-peer markets can fix both by decentralizing energy, the Internet, and even AI (Oct 1 | 17 min read).
