Greetings Bitcoiner,

❝

Welcome to Issue #688 of Bitcoin Breakdown, where it’s OPSEC Wednesday special, followed by the latest Quick Bits snippets. But first, today’s Top Stories:

VanEck launched a fund that puts bitcoin beside stocks, bonds and gold without owning any, Bithumb has not ruled out that member data leaked in a hack of its internal system, and Coinbase denies a breach after vendor Amplitude exposed customer contact data. Paper Bitcoin and exchange databases fail where self-custody of your own keys holds.

Your AI prompts are leaving out 80% of what you're thinking.

When you type a prompt, you summarize. When you speak one, you explain. Wispr Flow captures your full reasoning (constraints, edge cases, examples, tone) and turns it into clean, structured text you paste into ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI tool. 📈 VanEck Fund Adds Bitcoin Without Holding Any

VanEck, which managed about $244.1B as of Sept. 30, launched the Wealth Builder exchange-traded fund (WBMO), mixing global stocks, bonds, gold and other real assets that VanEck picks and rebalances. WBMO owns no bitcoin directly and gets its exposure through spot bitcoin products held via a Cayman Islands subsidiary.

Why it matters: This is paper bitcoin, because holders get no wallet, no seed phrase and no control while custody stays with intermediaries. Still, VanEck placing bitcoin beside gold signals institutional respect for Bitcoin, but sovereignty starts with your own keys. Read more→

⚠️ Bithumb Won't Rule Out Member Data in Hack Leak

South Korean exchange Bithumb is investigating a data leak after a hack of the internal mobile system its employees use to communicate. Bithumb notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission the same day, and it has not ruled out that member information was involved.

Why it matters: Bithumb says customer virtual assets cannot be accessed because trading runs on a separate system, while member identity data may already be exposed. Exchanges can wall off coins, but only self-custody and fewer records held by gatekeepers protect your privacy. Read more→

From one exchange's leak to a vendor's leak...

🔐 Coinbase Denies Breach as Vendor Leaks Contact Data

Coinbase Support said on X that a security incident at analytics vendor Amplitude impacted a small subset of Coinbase customer contact data, along with other Amplitude clients. Coinbase said it found no evidence of unauthorized access to Coinbase systems and that customer funds were not impacted, but it has not said how many customers were affected.

Why it matters: Coinbase drew the line at its own systems, while the contact data its customers handed over still leaked through Amplitude. Every identity record an exchange shares with intermediaries widens surveillance, which means Bitcoin in self-custody with minimal personal data is the real defense. Read more→

How to Stop a Rogue Server From Mapping Your Wallet and Tricking You Into Paying It

opsec
❝

On 24 October, Electrum disclosed that malicious servers were swapping users' freshly sent payments for fakes. The fake carried a zero fee and paid an address ground to match the last four characters of the real one. One user bumped the fee and paid the attacker.

The patch closes that trick. It does not close the bigger leak: a desktop wallet on default settings hands a stranger's server every address it owns, and that server can tie them into one wallet.

Which server is your wallet talking to right now? Why were some users never exposed at all? And which check, done before any fee bump, beats a lookalike address?

This week's OPSEC Feature Article shows you how to take your wallet's map away from strangers and make sure no server can steer your signature.
