TODAY’S TOP STORIES
🇵🇰 Pakistan Considers Bitcoin Mining Using Surplus Electricity
A proposal to leverage surplus electricity for bitcoin mining was floated at the inaugural meeting of the Pakistan Crypto Council this weekend. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, along with top officials from State Bank and Securities and Exchange Commission, attended the meeting. Bilal Bin Saqib, CEO of PCC, shared the vision of converting Pakistan’s surplus electricity into an economic advantage: ‘We can convert a liability into an asset.’ The country has excess electricity due to low demand or infrastructure problems. 🌪️ Tornado Cash Off US Sanctions List
The US Treasury has removed sanctions against the crypto mixer Tornado Cash, following a court ruling that it overstepped its authority. Despite this, founders Roman Storm and Roman Semenov still face legal issues. The Treasury, led by Secretary Scott Bessent, emphasized continued concern regarding state-sponsored hacking activities, particularly those originating from North Korea, and remains determined to ‘use its powers to counter malicious cyber actors who exploit digital assets and their ecosystem for illicit profits’. 🧐 IMF Acknowledges Bitcoin, But 'Digital Gold' is a Stretch
Rumors flew over the weekend that the International Monetary Fund labeled Bitcoin 'digital gold' in its updated Balance of Payments Manual, causing all round excitement among bitcoiners. However, it was a misinterpretation. The IMF acknowledged Bitcoin as a non-produced, nonfinancial asset designed as a medium of exchange or store of value. This treats BTC like property, not gold. The manual focuses on tracking cross-border Bitcoin and crypto flows, recognizing Bitcoin's unique role without endorsing it as a monetary reserve asset. Gradually, then suddenly. Bitcoinist
