Together with
Greetings Bitcoiner,
Welcome to Issue #612 of Bitcoin Breakdown, where we’re bringing you your end-of-week Bitcoin Digest featuring all the need-to-know Quick Bits snippets and Quick Media. But first, today’s Top Stories:
Today's issue is about who controls the keys, the exposure, and the gains. Coinkite tells affected Coldcard users to create new seeds and move funds, Santander disclosed a $4.3 million IBIT position, and South Korea is holding to a 2027 tax start while repeal remains possible. Bitcoin sovereignty depends on the custody structure beneath each headline.
This week's Coldcard disclosure exposes a basic failure: a hardware wallet can look secure while generating a predictable seed.
Jade Plus mixes randomness from several independent sources, including its hardware generator, camera, user input and the Blockstream app. Its hardware and firmware are public for review, and it can sign by QR without connecting to a computer.

If your Coldcard seed was created with affected firmware, a new device is only part of the fix. Generate a new wallet on the replacement and move the funds. Updating Coldcard firmware or importing the old seed does not make that seed safe.

🚨 Coldcard Seeds Need Replacing After the Entropy Warning
Coinkite warns affected Coldcard seeds must be replaced with completely new seeds after fixed firmware is installed. Block includes Mk4, Q, and Mk5 in its affected model set, while a July 30 sweep of about 594.5 BTC shows the cost of weak key generation.
Why it matters: Coldcard firmware updates protect future seed generation, not keys already created. This means affected users need a newly generated wallet and must move the funds. Read more→
🏦 Santander Discloses a $4.3 Million IBIT Position
Banco Santander's second-quarter filing listed 129,615 shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust exchange-traded fund. The Securities and Exchange Commission table reported the position at $4,314,883. The filing covered the quarter ended June 30 and was signed July 28.
Why it matters: The SEC filing records measurable institutional exposure through familiar securities rails. ETF shares preserve custodians and legal claims, while self-custody gives holders direct control over bitcoin. Read more→
🇰🇷 South Korea Puts Its 2027 Bitcoin Tax Back in Play
Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol reaffirmed South Korea's planned 2027 tax on Bitcoin and crypto gains. Current law sets a 22% combined rate above 2.5 million won, while a repeal bill remains in subcommittee. The scheduled start remains January 1, 2027, unless lawmakers repeal or delay it.
Why it matters: The state is advancing a claim on qualifying gains while lawmakers can still reject it. Bitcoin's fixed issuance remains outside the government's control and reach. Read more→
