🚨 Binance Confirms $6.3B Hack as Partners Freeze $3B

Binance confirmed a security breach it estimates at about $6.3B in total impact, and said it worked with blockchain partners to freeze about $3B onchain. Tether Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino said Tether froze more than 1.567B Tether (USDT), and Circle also froze USD Coin (USDC). Binance said it will cover all losses from its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.

Why it matters: Binance suspended deposits and withdrawals, so customers waited for permission to touch their own money. The freeze of about $3B also shows how easily governments can pressure intermediaries to censor, because trusted third parties are always security holes. Read more→

Theft of another kind reached Thailand's highest court...

🇹🇭 Thai Supreme Court Rules Stolen Bitcoin Is Property

Thailand's Supreme Court ruled that bitcoin qualifies as property in a robbery case, rejecting a defendant's argument that it had no value of its own, and upheld his 10-year prison sentence. Attackers on Koh Samui forced the victim to convert $50,000 into about 2.48 BTC in 2022. Judges cited its market price, while a Bank of Thailand letter on legal tender changed nothing.

Why it matters: Thailand's Supreme Court reasoned from market price, but bitcoin needs no court because proof of work secures it and your keys prove ownership. Bitcoin was property before any ruling, and confiscating it without the owner's consent is theft, even when the government does it. Read more→

From Thai judges to Europe's departing top central banker...

🇪🇺 Lagarde Will Leave European Central Bank Early

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde will step down on February 7, 2027, nearly nine months before her term was due to end. She said she wants the freedom to engage on matters that are not monetary policy. The European Council will appoint her successor, with Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos seen as leading contenders.

Why it matters: Lagarde has been a vocal critic of Bitcoin, and whoever takes charge next will affect how the euro functions as fiat money. Bitcoin continues to function as it always has since inception, with no successor to lobby and no central bank to obey. Read more→
